You have options.

Though it may feel overwhelming to think about the cost of addiction treatment, you have reasons to feel hopeful because the great news is that you have options. We’ll go over the main ones.

Check-in with your insurance about addiction treatment coverage.

Insurance plays a big part in addiction treatment coverage, and there have been some significant policy changes made in the early 2000s to assist those seeking treatment. Healthaffairs.org, says that in 2008, Congress passed the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA), which closed several gaps in the Mental Health Parity Act concerning addiction treatment. Most importantly, the MHPAEA applied the prohibition of differences to treatment limits, cost-sharing and in- and out-of-network coverage not only to mental health treatment but also to addiction treatment.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) also recognized addiction treatment as mental health treatment and applied the MHPAEA to insurance companies, which means that all health insurance plans in individual and small-employer markets have to include mental health and addiction treatment coverage. In fact, it is mandated as one of ten essential health benefits (EHBs), so it is very likely that you will have at least some coverage for treatment.

That seems like a lot to sort through, right? At The Right Step DFW, we will help you figure out what your insurance can do for you. Our experts will guide you along the way.

Check with HR.

It can feel a bit scary to go to your employer about your addiction issue, but keep in mind that not only will HR keep it confidential from your leadership and peers, they likely have an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) set up for this very reason. EAPs usually have some kind of assistance toward treatment programs.

According to the Society for Human Resources Management, companies lose tens of billions of dollars from lost productivity, absenteeism, and workplace accidents. Frankly, it’s good for the company’s bottom line to have happy and healthy employees! So, call a meeting with HR. It’s literally their job to support employees in making good, healthy choices.
