The unknown. It has the potential to create so much fear and anxiety in us. Yet, it can also create so much excitement and joy. It’s hard to know what to do when you don’t know what to do. How do you take that uncertainty and turn it into something positive?
Embrace The Uncertainty
I’m a planner. I love routines. Make no mistakes – I understand being uncomfortable with uncertainty. Yet – isn’t that where we find so much joy in life? It’s the surprises and the unexpected things that end up being the most rewarding. I never expected to be living an alcohol free life. Here I am 6 years later, with no desire to drink and a few books about the subject in bookstores. Never could I have planned the path my life would take but I now know better than to fight to control everything. Sometimes when you don’t know what to do the best thing is to do nothing. The right path will usually reveal itself when we stop fighting and start listening instead.
Figure Out The Ends
Most often when I don’t know what to do it’s because I haven’t formed a clear picture of what it is I want. I’m busy focusing on the means but I have no idea what the end result should be. When I was drinking I knew something needed to change but I didn’t know what that was. For me, the tipping point came when I realized that I didn’t want alcohol to be BIG in my life anymore. My end was to make alcohol small and irrelevant. That “Aha” moment allowed me to start working on the means to discover how to make alcohol small and irrelevant. That process led to me writing This Naked Mind.
Not knowing what to do led me to write This Naked Mind. Read about what I learned and the journey it took me on for free right now!
I’ve learned that indecision often keeps us from doing anything at all. Now when I’m indecisive I try to at least do something to move the needle in the direction I’m looking to go in. Even if I don’t necessarily do “the right thing,” the momentum of heading in the right direction is a great starting point. We learn by making mistakes. Rather than sitting on the fence because I don’t know what to do, I now hop off the fence and just do something. The worst thing that comes out of it is a data point on what doesn’t work. Failure is after all the mother of invention.
There’s one surefire way to make sure that I’m doing the right thing when I don’t know what to do. I look inward. Tune in and let your values guide you. We all have inner principles or that line in the sand that we don’t want to cross. I knew that every time I drank and made the choices I did I was crossing that line. My actions were no longer in line with my values and it didn’t feel good. Going against our values will automatically raise red flags internally so it’s a great place to start when you don’t know what to do.
Do This When You Don’t Know What To Do
I can’t claim the wisdom for this final piece of advice when it comes to what to do when you just can’t decide. It’s advice that is as old as time and has worked since the time of the dinosaurs.
Sleep on it.
Cliche, I know but it works. Often when we continue to ruminate on a choice, we lose sight of all the points and tips I just discussed above. So when you get to that point, take a step back. Walk away, sleep on it, and see what answers reveal themselves to you in the morning. You have all the tools needed to guide you.
Trust yourself, you know what you need to do after all.
